As highlighted previously by members of the ASA Committee on Young Physicians, effective mentorship serves to improve emotional health, productivity, and career satisfaction (ASA Monitor 2021;85:11-2). The traditional concept of mentorship is not without its limitations. Some challenges with establishing effective mentorship include lack of infrastructure, limited availability of experienced academic faculty, and their time constraints. It is also increasingly recognized that mentorship alone may not be enough to meet the mentee's academic and career needs (Acad Med 2019;94:94-100). Thus, the authors' institutions have developed several novel initiatives in resident development. Scholarly activity is an integral part of graduate medical education for anesthesiology residents. Among the scholarly work products, publications in peer-reviewed journals are desirable for both residents and for residency program accreditation.
