Educational assessment plays a crucial role in curriculum development and talent management, with summative and formative assessments being integral components. This study investigates the integration of summative assessment thoroughness with formative assessment flexibility, aiming to enhance both the learning efficiency of students and the instructional strategies of teachers in college English classrooms. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach-questionnaires, classroom observations, and interviews-this study gathers insights from both students and teachers. Quantitative results show that more than half of the students appreciate feedback based on summative assessments, and highlight that incorporating such feedback into daily formative practices can significantly improve learning outcomes. Qualitatively, a majority of teachers support the application of summative assessment results to enhance formative assessment techniques, which helps in gradually perfecting students' knowledge structures and evolving instructional methods. The study acknowledges challenges in adapting teaching strategies due to constraints like time and course structure. Based on feedback from participants, it recommends several strategies to effectively utilize summative assessment results in formative assessment design. These strategies are intended to promote a dynamic interaction between assessment types, thus enhancing overall educational effectiveness. This research underscores the transformative potential of feedback mechanisms for advancing pedagogical approaches and enhancing studentachievement, with significant implications for educational policy and practice in higher education.
