This paper focusses on the design of the switched reluctance motor (SRM) suitable for driving electric vehicles using RMXprt and finite element analysis of the motor using Ansys Maxwell 2D. The SRMs are gaining popularity in the EV segments because of its cost effectiveness, simple and robust construction. The advancements in the FEA tools helps in designing the motor based on IEC standards. The use of non-grain oriented steel based in AISI standards for the steel laminations impacts the core loss of the motor. The effect of change in slot / pole combination of the motor and pole along with their impact on flux lines, flux density and efficiency of the motor is discussed in this paper. The SRM combinations of 8/6 pole and 12/8 pole is detailed.
