The development of a content system centered on big ideas in the music curriculum has continued until the 2015 revised and 2022 revised curriculum. But the meaning and content of big ideas are not clear, but not many studies have been conducted on them, raising the need for research. Therefore, in this study, the meaning and role of big ideas were examined in detail, and from that, the meaning and content of big ideas in the 2015 revised and 2022 revised music curriculum in Korean and foreign countries were analyzed. As a result, the meaning of big ideas in foreign and Korean music curriculums is not clearly presented, and the development principle is also different from the way big ideas are derived, making it difficult to confirm whether the developed content is correct for the big ideas of the music subject. The problems that resulted in these analysis results were considered, and the direction for improvement for the development of big ideas in the music curriculum was suggested as follows. First, the method of applying the content system centered on big ideas should be different depending on the subject. Second, the derivation of big ideas in the music subject must be made first at the unit or thematic level. Third, in order to derive big ideas in the music subject, the facts, knowledge, skills, and concepts must be identified first. Fourth, teacher expertise in class design centered on big ideas must be secured.
