Significance Turkey seeks to narrow its large trade deficit with China, which contributes to an unsustainable current account deficit. Falling imports last year and in 2024 have eased the strain on the current account but export growth is losing momentum due to the conflict in Gaza and the waning of the war-related boost to trade with Russia. Impacts Turkey will continue to resist imposing sanctions on Russia and resent US efforts to hamper its trade. The priority attached to economic goals will favour pragmatism in foreign policy. Further protectionist measures may be taken to cut imports from selected countries.
