Choi Seung-ro(崔承老)'s proposal shows his evaluation of rituals, which he uses the concept of "Byeolryegije(別例祈祭)" to criticize specific rituals. The rituals he criticized include 'non-Confucianism rites', 'frequent rites', 'non-normative rites', and 'wishing rites(祈祭)'.Choi Seung-ro emphasized performing rituals according to the norms and also expressed the importance of establishing the proper norms. Choi Seung-ro recognized that rituals that did not conform to the norm led to a lack of sincerity and excessive mobilization of the subjects and soon caused various side effects.Choi Seung-ro argued that the rules of rituals should be modeled on China's and finded its source in the Confucian scriptures. In other words, the proper ritual he referred to meant a Confucian ritual. He criticizes the rituals of Buddhism, Taoism, and shamanism, as well as the 'wishing rites'.As a result, "Byeolryegije" defined by Choi Seung-ro is a wishing rites that does not follow the norms of Confucianism.
