Impact of land fragmentation and fragmentation of property rights on the profit efficiency of rice cultivation and multiple farming in Taiwan

This study assesses the impact of land fragmentation (LF) and property rights fragmentation on the profit efficiency of rice and multiple crop farming in Taiwan using a stochastic profit frontier model. Key findings indicate that LF negatively affects profit efficiency, particularly in rice farming; however, diversifying into multiple crops can mitigate this effect, suggesting the complexity of LF's impact on agricultural efficiency. This research underscores the need for targeted policies to address LF and property rights issues, suggesting land consolidation and the promotion of leasing without ownership transfer as viable strategies. The findings advocate for a comprehensive approach to agricultural policy and land management practices, focusing on improving profit efficiency through strategic land use, diversification, and sustainable farming practices.
