Festschriften and Collected Essays Thomas Hieke, Christopher T. Begg, Brent A. Strawn, and Fred W. Guyette ________ 1483. Editions and Studies of the Testament of Solomon Felix Albrecht, Editionen und Studien zum Testamentum Salomonis (Parabiblica 1; Tübingen: Mohr Siebeck, 2023). Pp. x + 289. €129. ISBN 978–3-16–162443–8; ISBN 978–3-16–162444–5 (eBook). The Testament of Solomon (TestSal) tells the legendary story of King Solomon, who, aided by demons, built the Jerusalem Temple. The TestSal is attested almost exclusively in Late-Byzantine manuscripts, the oldest one dating to the 14th century c. e. (Cod. Vat. gr. 1700). This volume offers ten research essays on this ancient text dealing with the Greek and Oriental tradition concerning King Solomon as exorcist and temple builder. It provides new and previously unstudied Greek, Arabic, and Coptic material in critical editions and modern translations (English, German, and Italian). The opening article presents an introduction to the new Mohr Siebeck series "Parabiblica" by Jan Dochhorn. The first part of the volume features text editions and essays on the transmission of texts: Felix Albrecht: "Neue Textzeugen für das Testamentum Salomonis (Teil A: Codex Athos Kutlumusiu 148) "; Tommaso Braccini: "Un testimone negletto del Testamento di Salomone: Una nuova edizione dell'esorcismo salomonico contenuto nel manoscritto EBE 825, ff. 8v–12v"; Jan Dochhorn: "Testament Salomos B (ngr. ) nach Athen, Εθνική Βιβλιοθήκη, gr. 2011 (saec. 18), ff. 19–40"; Juan Pedro Monferrer-Sala: "The Testament of Solomon in Arabic: 'Edition, Translation and Study'"; Slavomír Čéplö, "Matthew Scarborough and Alin Suciu: "Arabic and Coptic Witnesses to the Transmission of the Testament of Solomon in Christian Egypt: Judgments of Solomon and the Legend of Solomon and Thabor"; Natia Mirotadze: "King Solomon in the Georgian Tradition. " The volume's second part presents studies on selected issues: Jan Dochhorn: "The Testament of Solomon: Some Preliminary Remarks"; Blake A. Jurgens: "Demonic Decans: An Analysis of Chapter 18 of the Testament of Solomon"; Matthew Goff: "The Diabolical Wisdom of Solomon: Assessing the Jewishness of the Testament of Solomon"; Jan Dochhorn: "Warum das Testament Salomos wichtig ist: Ein Beitrag aus neutestamentlicher Sicht. " The collection comes with four indexes: ancient sources, manuscripts, modern authors, and topics. See also #1485. —T. H. 1484. ISBN 978–3-11–099912–9. In the Middle Ages, Bibles, both Jewish and Christian, in Hebrew, Greek and Latin, circulated in a variety of formats: large volumes, small volumes, the whole Bible in a single or several volumes or partial Bibles, Bibles accompanied by commentaries, as well as Bibles with distinctive arrangements of the component books or even omissions of certain books of the recognized Christian or Jewish canons. The contributions making up this collective volume, which is dedicated to a major researcher in the field, the late Paul Canart, explore sample cases of the above phenomena as exemplified by a range of medieval Bible manuscripts. The contributions are in either English or French; each comes with its own bibliography and several provide illustrations of pages of the medieval Bibles they discuss. The contributions are organized under four headings as follows: (1) Complete Bibles (in one or several volumes) (3 essays) ; (2) Partial Bibles (2 essays) ; (3) Bibles with commentaries; and (4) Medieval biblical scrolls (1 essay). For abstracts of the essays, see ##890, 891, 897, 898, 900, 918, 928. —C. T. B. 1485.
