ISBN 978–3-16–162443–8; ISBN 978–3-16–162444–5 (eBook). The Testament of Solomon (TestSal) tells the legendary story of King Solomon, who, aided by demons, built the Jerusalem Temple. The TestSal is attested almost exclusively in Late-Byzantine manuscripts, the oldest one dating to the 14th century c. e. (Cod. Vat. gr. 1700). This volume offers ten research essays on this ancient text dealing with the Greek and Oriental tradition concerning King Solomon as exorcist and temple builder. It provides new and previously unstudied Greek, Arabic, and Coptic material in critical editions and modern translations (English, German, and Italian). The opening article presents an introduction to the new Mohr Siebeck series "Parabiblica" by Jan Dochhorn. In the Middle Ages, Bibles, both Jewish and Christian, in Hebrew, Greek and Latin, circulated in a variety of formats: large volumes, small volumes, the whole Bible in a single or several volumes or partial Bibles, Bibles accompanied by commentaries, as well as Bibles with distinctive arrangements of the component books or even omissions of certain books of the recognized Christian or Jewish canons. The contributions making up this collective volume, which is dedicated to a major researcher in the field, the late Paul Canart, explore sample cases of the above phenomena as exemplified by a range of medieval Bible manuscripts. The contributions are in either English or French; each comes with its own bibliography and several provide illustrations of pages of the medieval Bibles they discuss.
