The article deals with the current issues of organization and methods of physical education of higher education students. The author emphasizes that modern youth is largely deprived of physical activity. As a result, they spend a lot of time sitting in front of a computer or other devices and lead a sedentary lifestyle. It is on the basis of the above that the authors believe that the pedagogical process, organization and methods of physical education of students at the current transformational stage of higher education should be aimed at a set of actions of the teacher and student to achieve the set tasks and goals. The main tasks to be solved by physical education in a modern higher education institution are considered. It is proposed that during physical education classes students should be divided by the level of physical development: basic, special and sports. It is determined that during physical education it is appropriate to use the following forms of organization of the educational process: training sessions; sectional work; independent work; control measures. The main types of physical education classes include: lecture (theoretical class); practical class; seminar class; methodical classes; instructor-methodical classes; individual class; consultation. The basic methods and principles of physical education are characterized. It is concluded that it is necessary to pay attention to updating and systematizing the current state of physical education of students of higher educational institutions in order to orient it to the modern realities of student life, because today there is a drastic change in the ideas about the modern process of physical education in higher educational institutions, which requires the formation of flexible teaching models that take into account the possibilities of ensuring the maximum realization of the motor potential of the individual in the process of forming personal physical culture.
