This article reviews various interpretations on the status of nonce words, as well as the similarities and differences between the nonce words and the neologisms. On the basis of existing research in the specialized literature, there is formulated a definition of this speech phenomenon which, although it is placed in the peripheral area of the vocabulary, is an indispensable part of communicative acts.
