Balancing Urban Development and Environmental Sustainability: A Case Study of Zamboanga City, Philippines

This study examines the intricate balance between urban development and environmental sustainability in Zamboanga City, Philippines, utilizing up-to-date data. Rapid urbanization in Zamboanga led to significant socio-economic benefits, including improved infrastructure, increased economic activities, and enhanced living standards. However, these advancements also imposed considerable environmental challenges, such as habitat destruction, increased pollution, and resource depletion. Through a mixed-methods approach, incorporating both qualitative and quantitative data, this research explored the impact of urban development on the city's natural environment. Key findings revealed that while urban growth spurred economic progress, it concurrently strained local ecosystems and biodiversity. The study underscored the necessity for sustainable urban planning strategies that harmonize development goals with environmental preservation. Policy recommendations were proposed, focusing on integrating green infrastructure, enforcing stricter environmental regulations, and promoting community engagement in sustainability initiatives. This case study of Zamboanga City offered valuable insights for other rapidly urbanizing regions aiming to achieve sustainable development.
