Abstract Introduction The aim of this project was to investigate the attitude and experience of students of human medicine towards safety and health in their studies. At the beginning of the winter semester, an evaluation of safety and health during studies was carried out as part of the project. Methods The participants of the instruction in the 1st semester (must-attend event) were interviewed. At the time of the online survey the participants were not yet familiar with the faculty’s e-learning modules on safety and health. An online survey instrument specially developed within the project was used. Results, discussion and conclusion In total, “only” about 50% of the participating students had already received instruction at school or as part of a training course completed prior to their studies. For the remaining participants it was the first instruction. Less than 20% had completed an apprenticeship before studying. The overwhelming majority had no experience of an accident at work or on the way to work at the time of the survey, but surprisingly, more than 80% of the participants knew that they were insured for accidents through the university. At this point in time, the difference between the legal health insurance and the legal accident insurance had already been explained to them during the instruction. Nearly 100% of the participants consider it important that their health is not affected by their studies. Over 90% find instructions on safety and health important. However, about 40% of the participants would be willing to risk a minor injury to perform a task.
