This article discusses issues related to the concept and essence of punishment in general and criminal punishment in particular. The author reveals the nature of these concepts based on the scientific concepts of domestic and foreign scientists, highlighting punishment as a necessary, but not the only element of punishment. In addition to punishment, such elements as persuasion and corrective and educational influence on the perpetrator are important. Joining the competent opinion of a number of scientists, the author proposes to expand the concept of criminal punishment by including resocialization as a mandatory feature, in addition to correction and education.
