The article highlights the formation of the position of the administration of the 42nd US President William Clinton on the events taking place in the early 90s in civil war-torn Bosnia. It analyzes the factors and reasons influenc-ing the formation of this position, its evolution, and eventual implementation. To assess this policy, two of the most influential US newspapers are used – The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, newspapers re-flecting the sentiments of the bulk of the country’s liberals and conservatives. The significance of this study lies in the necessity to understand the algorithms used by American authorities in formulating foreign policy deci-sions and their alignment with public opinion as reflected in mass media tailored to specific social audiences. Scientific novelty of the work lies in introducing a substantial volume of American press into research dis-course.
