6409 Safety netting in a Children’s emergency department

Objectives Evaluate documentation of safety netting advice given to parents, carers, children and young people, in a children's emergency department at a district general hospital Standardise the provision of both written and verbal safety netting advice Incorporate safety netting training in medical inductions Develop a safety netting advice leaflet for the children's emergency department Methods Retrospective review of electronic discharge summaries from 22nd April to 27th May 2021 Stratified random sampling was used A total of 48 discharge summaries were reviewed 12 discharge summaries chosen from weekdays – daytime shifts 12 discharge summaries chosen from weekdays – evening/night shifts 12 discharge summaries chosen from weekends – daytime shifts 12 discharge summaries chosen from weekends – evening/night shifts Results 29% of discharge summaries did not have any safety netting advice documented (14/48) 21% of discharge summaries had unspecific safety netting advice documented (10/48) 50% of discharge summaries had specific safety netting advice documented (24/48) Conclusion Only 50% of the reviewed discharge summaries had specific safety netting advice documented. Standards were not being met, as stipulated in Facing the Future RCPCH 2015 In this review we did not find sufficient evidence of good communication and documentation practices with regard to safety netting Although it cannot be assumed that the advice was not given verbally, when advice was documented, the level was very variable Recommendations were made and we created a safety netting advice leaflet with patient and public involvement. The leaflet was approved by the Trust Patient Information Review Panel and incorporated in the Trust intranet.
