Abstract This article introduces some of the most significant recent developments in scholarship on Ignatius of Antioch. Despite much intense debate over the last three hundred years, the issue of the authentic text of the Ignatian letters remains contentious. Recent research on the intellectual and cultural context of Ignatius’s letters claims both an Hellenistic and an early Jewish influence.
