The article examines general aspects of the regulation of family and marriage relations at the early stage of the formation of law and state in Ancient Rome. A historical and legal analysis of the evolution of family and marriage relations in the ancient civilization of the period of Ancient Rome was carried out. An inversely proportional relationship has been established in the sphere of the relationship between the state and the family and marriage sphere: the more developed and complex the system of the Roman state became, the more simple and “down to earth” the institutions of family and marriage, the methods and results of their establishment, were characterized.
