A Study on the Division of Toegye-School and Yulgok-School: Expansion, Deepening, and Appropriation of the This Culture of Ours in the Academic World in 17C

I started with a question as to whether the genealogy that divides the ideological world of the “Taegye School, Yulgok School” is appropriate in the development of the history of thought in Joseon. In other words, I think that the distinction between Toegye School=Ju-ri School=Yeongnam School and Yulgok School=Ju-gi School=Giho School is an inappropriate concept and composition that differs from the historical development of the Joseon thought world. First, I examined the formation of Sarim's self-consciousness up to the time of Toegye Yi-Hwang and Nammeong Cho-sik. It showed the identity of “this culture of ours斯文” about Confucianism. And in the process, the cultivation theory that continues from the tradition of the Kinship of the Three According to the Book of Changes周易參同契 was developed. The establishment of “this culture of ours” was the line drawing to Zen禪 and Daoism道家, and the distinction between Confucian scholars and Taoists. Here, the Synopsis of Zhu Xi’s Letters and the commentary on the Elementary Learning were produced. Second, after examining the Four-Seven Debate, which was a meeting between Toegye and Gobong, the historical character of it was examined. Through this debate, Gobong became a disciple of Toegye, and his status was reflected in Toegye's literary collection. At the same time, Yulgok Yiyi summarized the characteristics of Sarim politics with the keywords of the class of scholars and the officers who hold only government office, and presented the representation of a politician who did not fall into the trap of the bureaucracy. Third, the characteristics of Toegye-Yulgok were examined through the study of ritual and the study of the mind-and-heart of Sagye Kim Jang-saeng and Wooam Song Si-yeol, representative scholars and the appropriation of Toegye of Galam Lee Hyun-il in the 17C King Injo-Sukjong period. Through these researches, in the case of Sagye and Wooam, I suggest we should be careful of the excessive separation of “Toegye School, Yulgok School”. In the case of Galam, the reasons and limitations of the separation of “Toegye School, Yulgok School” were confirmed.
