The British Society of Gerodontology (BSG) 2024 Summer Meeting was co-hosted with the All Wales Special Interest Group (SIG).The event took place at the Raddison Blu Hotel in Cardiff on Friday 14 June. The meeting had presentations from a diverse range of speakers involved in health and social care for older people, in accordance with the theme: ' Ageing Well in Progression' .There were 70 attendees present at this engaging day which focused on adding life to years, not years to life. The meeting opened with a welcome from Adele Cunningham, President of BSG (pictured, left), and Sarah Pick, Chair for SIG (pictured, right). They put together an informative, thought-provoking day in line with the values of the BSG and demonstrated many of the innovations that are benefiting the older population in Wales.Every speaker included cases to give further insight and humanise figures and facts, allowing for a reflective and rewarding day.The first speaker was Rachel Bowen, Director of Policy at Older People's Commissioner for Wales.Wales was the first country in the UK to set up an Older People's Commissioner.By acting as a voice for older people, their four priorities are protecting and promoting older people's rights, stopping the abuse of older people, ending ageism and age discrimination, enabling everyone to age well. One of the key themes was digital exclusion, affecting various aspects of life many take for granted. They demonstrated how health care providers may discriminate against older people and how they are challenging ageist stereotypes and encouraging best practice. This was an informative, eye-opening talk from a well-spoken presenter.
