Humanity learned from nature, but exploration replaced learning, resulting in environmental problems. A sustainable approach to design involves learning from nature, respecting principles and processes. Biomimetic architecture, inspired by natural principles and processes, is innovative in the design of buildings. Modernists such as Gaudí, Fuller and Nervi used natural elements in their works, precursors of biomimicry. Contemporaries such as Calatrava, Brajovic and Nouvel apply it explicitly. This study analyzes the production of both aspects through a classificatory analysis, including a reading of aspects borrowed from biology. The aim is to highlight influences and lessons in architectural practice.
