Integrating a Bilingual Approach to Improve Second Grade Students' English Language Scores at Sumberrejo State Elementary School

This research investigates the effectiveness of bilingual learning in improving English language scores among elementary school students at SDN Sumberrejo. This research involved 16 students and implemented a bilingual approach, using Indonesian first language (L1) and English second language (L2) in classroom teaching. using CAR methodology and carrying out pre-test and post-test with an increase of 6.5%. The material provided to students is also local to Banyuwangi to continue to equip students with awareness of local culture. Despite the challenges posed by the students' diverse backgrounds, the bilingual method has proven successful in improving English language learning at this school.Research finds that implementing a bilingual approach has a positive impact on students' English language skills. The pre-test score showed an average of 79.6%, while the post-test score increased to 86.1% which showed a significant improvement. This shows that the integration of L1 and L2 in the teaching and learning process helps students better understand and remember English concepts.Additionally, the use of locally relevant material in a bilingual approach is a key factor in engaging students and enhancing their learning experience. By connecting English lessons to local contexts, students can relate the content to their own lives and cultural backgrounds, thereby increasing their motivation and participation in class activities.Despite the students' diverse backgrounds, bilingual methods have proven to be an effective strategy in overcoming language barriers and creating a more inclusive learning environment. Teachers are able to take advantage of students' familiarity with their mother tongue (Indonesian) to facilitate understanding of English concepts, thereby reducing cognitive load and improving overall learning outcomes.
