This study aims to propose and verify measures to enhance the understanding of course content and improve Korean language proficiency among international students by applying Content-Based Instruction (CBI) to ‘foreigner-only’ courses in Korean universities. Korean universities are facing challenges due to a declining student population, and attracting international students is one of the solutions to this problem. How ever, the increasing number of international students with insufficient Korean lan guage proficiency poses difficulties for both teachers and learners in the classroom. To address this issue, This study proposes the application of the ‘Content Protection Model’, a sub-mod el of CBI, to ‘foreigner-only’ courses. This study implemented a ‘Content Protection Model’ in ‘foreigner-only’ courses offered in the second semester of 2023 and the first semester of 2024. The effectiveness of the instruction was analyzed through a questionnaire survey, which revealed that the ‘Content Protection Model’ of CBI can have a significant impact on international students taking ‘foreigner-only’ courses. Providing appropriate additional materials at a suitable level for international students to understand the course content effectively enhances their Korean lan guage proficiency. Furthermore, helping learners understand the course content leads to greater immersion in the subject matter, which in turn further enhances their Korean language proficiency.
