The text focuses on the structure and thematic scope of Bulgarian and Ukrainian reading for grade IV. It explores what the expectations are of literature education in aesthetic, didactic, social and pedagogical terms. It looks for a link between the specific historical development in Bulgaria and Ukraine and the selection of the texts in the readers. It is argued that the Ukrainian reader has a particularly strong emphasis on the Slavic origin of the Ukrainians. Texts in the readers outlining geographical borders and the beauty of the native land are commented. It pays attention to the mother-country analogy as well as to the apologia of the native language.
