A comparative study between point‐of‐care hemoglobin (capillary samples) and laboratory hemoglobin result (venous samples)

Abstract Objective Point‐of‐care tests (POCTs) are commonly utilized in emergency departments. The purpose of this study was to evaluate accuracy and clinical utility of capillary POCT Hemocue (POCT Hcue) in emergency department setting. Methods This was a retrospective study. Accident and emergency department attendances ≥18 years old with a capillary POCT Hcue result and a paired venous hemoglobin (Hb) result were eligible. Statistical analyses including Pearson coefficient and Bland–Altman plot were performed to assess the relationship and agreement between capillary POCT Hcue and venous Hb. Results One hundred and seven patients were included in the analysis. 59% were female. 67% of the patients were from triage category 3. Scatter plot revealed a linear relationship between capillary POCT Hcue and venous Hb, with a correlation coefficient calculated to be 0.95. The mean difference was −0.30 on the Bland–Altman plot with the limits of agreement from −1.83 to +1.22. Conclusion Capillary POCT Hcue had acceptable agreement with venous Hb in emergency department setting.
