The high life expectancy rates among older adults, which lead to an increase in the prevalence of chronic degenerative diseases, such as dementia, impose a burden on their caregivers. In this context, we analyzed the burden on caregivers of older individuals with Alzheimer’s disease who exhibit neuropsychiatric symptoms, considering socioeconomic and clinical factors. The study was conducted within the health care network for older adults in the Federal District and included 962 participants, both caregivers and older individuals with dementia receiving specialized care. The results indicate that the presence of neuropsychiatric symptoms in older men, under 90 years of age, with more than four years of education, functional and financial dependence, and multimorbidity, and in moderate stages of Alzheimer’s disease is more likely to cause caregiver burden. The study highlights the importance of public policies, emotional support, and training for these caregivers.
