Abstract The ability and quality of Fire protection facility operator directly determine whether the Fire protection facility control room can operate normally, whether the fire emergency disposal of buildings and structures is effective, and whether the fire safety management can be reliably guaranteed. In order to scientifically evaluate the abilities and qualities of fire protection facility operators, based on the competency theory, the competency model of fire protection facility operators is constructed from five dimensions: professional knowledge and skills, communication and cooperation ability, learning and adaptation ability, physical and mental quality and personality traits, and career development motivation. On this basis, the principal component analysis method is used to quantitatively evaluate the competency of fire protection facility operators.The results show that the overall competence of fire protection facility operators in Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan and Chongqing is insufficient. It is mainly manifested in the lack of spirit to bear hardships and stand hard work, weak learning ability, generally low vocational qualification level and education level, less vocational training hours and lack of long-term personal career planning.
