In recent years, U.S. journalists have formed labor unions to address job insecurity, benefit cuts, and wage issues. Unions have played a critical role in advancing gender equality in the newsroom. Through in-depth interviews with women involved in union organizing at American newspapers, this study shows how feminist empowerment and gender dynamics manifested through organizing activities. The findings indicate union organizing empowers women by giving them opportunities to assume leadership roles, address systemic oppression, and shape the future of journalism.
