The authors of the article set a goal – based on information from the "Divan lugat at-turk" by Mahmud Kashgari to consider the history of the rulers of the Turkic states who lived before their era. Despite the numerous studies devoted to the "Dictionary of Turkic Languages", the issue raised in the article remains poorly understood. The novelty of the idea of the article is the perspective of the problem that the authors of the article highlight. The main source for researchers was a three-volume edition by Xinjiang colleagues, translations into Russian by Z.-A.M.Auezova, A.R. Rustamov. The Dictionary contains rare information about Alp Ar Ton, the ruler of Turan. In the course of the research, the methods of source analysis were used. The nature of the struggle between the Karakhanid states and the Idikut state, which were established on the territory of East Turkestan, is revealed. In parallel, the struggle of two religions is highlighted: Islam and Buddhism for dominance over this area. The value of the information recorded in the work of the XI century is emphasized. It is concluded that the "Divan lugat at-turk" by Mahmud Kashgari makes it possible to recreate the history of some Turkic states of antiquity and the Middle Ages, the struggle of two world religions for supremacy. Along with this question, the meaning of certain terms and concepts is revealed. Some events directly related to interreligious issues are highlighted. The article was prepared within the framework of fundamental scientific research by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Republic of Kazakhstan «East countries: geopolitical challenges and new prospects for Kazakhstan in historical and modern dimensions» (Grant No. BR 20281006) Key words:Karakhanid state, Idikut state, Islam, Buddhism, historical reality, Turkic world, East Turkestan.
