Strategic planning is considered from the perspective of modern theory and practice and is defined as the process of government agencies developing goals and parameters of key socio-economic indicators for the future and determining the necessary mechanisms for their implementation. The article shows that, by regulating the economy, the state carries out purposeful work to achieve its goals and solve socio-economic problems of the corresponding stage of society’s development. The collapse of the USSR and the series of geopolitical processes that followed it contributed to the emergence of the so-called partially recognized by the world community, or de facto states 14, p. 24, one of which is the Republic of South Ossetia. The article considers the conceptual quintessence of strategic planning as an instrument of socio-economic management of the Republic of South Osetia, analyzes the features of the economy and reflects the current directions of its further development.
