The purpose of this study is topropose a new approach for developing a workbook to support the learning ofhistory for immigrant students in middle school. Immigrant students, primarily dueto their limited proficiency in Korean, struggle to comprehend history classes. Toachieve the goals of history education, a new workbook based on the schoolhistory textbooks should be developed. This study presents the purpose of thenewly developed workbook and suggests its development principles as follows: 1)selecting units based on the national curriculum, 2) setting learning objectives ofeach unit based on achievement standards, 3) selecting learning elements(vocabulary, grammar, and Chinese characters) based on unit objectives and theirfrequency in history textbooks, 4) designing units with a gradual increase indifficulty throughout each unit, and 5) differentiating learning activities for variousstudent levels. This study has significance in that it demonstrates a practicalmethod for developing Korean workbooks to help immigrant students learn history.
