The current state of ISO 9001-based quality management systems is intertwined with the updates of Annex SL, the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), and more recently – the effect of climate action changes. In December 2023, ISO published the standard ISO/IEC 42001:2023 “Information Technology — Artificial Intelligence — Management System”. This presents itself as an actionable opportunity for organisations around the world to enhance their existing management systems. The drive for innovations and the risk appetite of organisations shall be balanced by the ethical and responsible use of AI to build trust in AI applications. This paper presents a comparative analysis and suggests an approach to integrate the best practices established in the proven ISO 9001 standard with the brand-new AI management system standard. The threat of being hampered by the potential societal challenges provoked by late and insufficient AI integration in their management systems is very real. To stay afloat and, more importantly, to prosper organisations need to act and adapt to these impactful game-changing trends.
