The objective of the research is to identify specific features of functioning of precedent proper names, namely, precedent anthroponyms (images of political figures) in news media texts within the source domain “Politics” as a part of the English-language mass-media discourse. The scientific novelty of the research is that for the first time the potential of precedent anthroponyms from the English-language news media political texts is revealed, which contributes to the formation of the functional field of the mass-media texts. For the first time the mechanism of metaphorization (allusive mechanism) of English precedent anthroponyms is systematically described, which is based on linguocultural specifics, cultural perceptions and native speakers’ level of knowledge. As a result of the research, it is proved that metaphorical transformations of precedent proper names can perform the following functions: actualization of both the precedent text/situation and the nationally determined minimized representation that is behind this name; formation and clarification of a new concept in the readers’ consciousness through the already known concept of the precedent proper name; expression of the emotional and evaluative attitude of the speaker to the subject (phenomenon, situation) through the image of the precedent proper name and the associations connected with it.
