The aim of this study is to typologize the stylistic and lexical characteristics of onomastic dominants (onomoanthroponyms, onomotoponyms, homonyms) of Russian and British news discourse and their polysemantic and homonymic variations. The article describes and analyzes the headlines and briefings of such news publishers as RIA Novosti, RBC, TASS, Gazeta.ru (Russia) and The Times, The Guardian, The Independent, The Daily Telegraph, The Observer, Daily Mail (UK). A consistent analysis of the onomas-tic phenomena of the discourse of modern Russian and British mass media has revealed the stylistic, prag-matic and cognitive characteristics of the studied dominants. The scientific novelty of the study is to com-pare the features of the use of onomastic units in news headlines and news briefings of traditional and new Russian and British media. As a result of the study, it was found that the modern news discourse in Russia and the UK is characterized by the use of such polysemantic onomastic phenomena as onomoanthroponyms and onomotoponyms and, less often, onomotonyms and onomophytonyms to create the effect of language play, metaphors and allusions and achieve a greater attractive and pragmatic impact on the potential reader
