Does the risk of serious cardiac events requiring secondary prevention ICD implantation differ between apical and non-apical hypertrophic cardiomyopathy?
Apical HCM may not be as benign as previously assumed, with patients facing a substantial risk for serious cardiac events comparable to non-apical HCM, warranting consideration for ICD implantation in high-risk cases.
This study demonstrated that apical hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) accounted for 15.6% of patients who underwent implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) implantation. The proportion of ICD implantations for secondary prevention did not differ significantly between apical and non-apical HCM subtypes. These findings suggest that the clinical course of apical HCM may not be as benign as previously assumed, and that patients with apical HCM remain at a substantial risk for serious cardiac events.Accordingly, ICD implantation should be considered in high-risk patients with apical HCM.
