The article presents an analysis of the opinions of students of higher educational institutions of Volgograd on gender asymmetry in the IT sphere. The IT sphere refers to various areas of information technology (software development, information security, network technologies, etc.), education and career path in these areas. The relevance of the work is determined by the fact that technological progress provides many advantages and opportunities for everyone. However, behind technological innovations are hidden problems that women in the IT sphere face every day, due to the existence of gender stereotypes in Russian society. The question arises of how much the current situation in the IT sphere, in particular, the gender asymmetry in it, obvious to researchers, is visible to students, future specialists in the IT sphere, what is their assessment of this situation, options for changing it (in relation to women)? One of the objectives of the conducted sociological study was to find answers to the questions about whether modern students of Volgograd higher education institutions have an idea of gender asymmetry in the IT sphere, whether they have encountered it, and how they see the ways to overcome it. The conducted sociological study among students showed that the existence of gender inequality: a) sounds louder in the statements of girls than boys; b) stereotypes are encountered at the stage of choosing a future profession; c) accompany in the learning process; d) occur in cases when a person is already trying his hand at a professional field.
