Cognitive Resilience and Religious Faith in the Digital Age: Exploring the Role of Spirituality in Enhancing Decision-making and Psychological Safety — Case Study: Churches in St. Kitts and Nevis

Abstract In the context of digital transformation and pervasive social media use, the integrity of cognitive processes is increasingly threatened by misinformation, information warfare, and psychological manipulation. Yet, the role of religious faith in fostering cognitive resilience and psychological safety remains underexplored. This study addresses this gap by examining how religious beliefs and spiritual practices support mental safeguarding and critical thinking within complex digital environments. The research is guided by the central question: How does religiosity contribute to cognitive and emotional resilience in the face of digital-era psychological vulnerabilities?A mixed-methods design was adopted, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews with religious practitioners and pastoral caregivers in FIF St. Kitts and Nevis. The methodology was selected to holistically capture both measurable outcomes and lived experiences. Quantitative data focused on perceived cognitive resilience, faith engagement, and psychological well-being, while qualitative interviews offered contextual depth into spiritual practices as cognitive tools.Findings reveal that individuals with high levels of faith engagement reported stronger resilience against mental stress, social shaping, and digital misinformation. Practices such as prayer, scriptural meditation, and faith community participation were associated with enhanced critical thinking, emotional regulation, and cognitive clarity.This study contributes to interdisciplinary discourse by integrating psychological resilience theory with theological insights. It underscores the originality of exploring spirituality as a cognitive safeguard and proposes faith-based strategies for pastoral care and digital literacy. The research offers a novel framework for understanding the cognitive function of religious engagement in the digital age.
