The growing role of road transport in the organization of multimodal transport through the ports of the Arctic and Pacific Oceans is considered, plus the ports of the northern rivers of the Russian Federation are covered. The characteristics of sea ports and ports of river basins, which are in a direct relationship with the provision of cargo transshipment, have been studied. It was revealed that a significant part of the ports have only interaction between road and sea transport. Road transport transports goods using winter roads. We carry out transportation of minerals, hydrocarbon raw materials, cargo for their extraction and cargo necessary for the livelihoods of the population of the northern territories of the country (Northern Delivery cargo). The Northern Sea Route provides communications to 27 constituent entities of the Russian Federation. The article presents important historical moments in the creation and development of the Northern Sea Route. Prospects for the growth of multimodal transportation have been identified, with a special role for road transport highlighted.
