This study critically examines the involvement and motivation of faculty members in research and community extension across state universities and colleges in Cagayan Valley, Philippines. Employing a descriptive-correlational research design, the investigation reveals that faculty engagement is robust in research initiation and output, yet moderate in research presentation, publication, and extension activities, particularly in monitoring and evaluation. Intrinsic motivation—anchored in personal fulfillment, intellectual curiosity, and pedagogical enhancement—emerges as a primary driver of faculty engagement, while extrinsic motivators such as promotion prospects, institutional recognition, and performance evaluations play a significant yet secondary role. Notably, the findings establish a significant positive correlation between faculty involvement in research and extension and both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, underscoring the reciprocal relationship between engagement and motivational constructs. The study highlights persistent barriers, including heavy teaching loads, limited institutional support, and insufficient training and resources, which collectively constrain faculty participation and productivity. Recommendations emphasize the need for targeted professional development, policy refinement, enhanced institutional support, and a balanced approach to fostering both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. By addressing these dimensions, universities can cultivate a more vibrant scholarly environment, elevate research and extension outcomes, and strengthen their societal impact.
