The article, taking into account the views of scientists whose subject of research was the principles of social security law, provides an author’s definition of the principles of social security law and identifies their essential features. It is noted that in the scientific literature, researchers focus on various specific features of these principles. Thus, depending on the theoretical approach, the principles can be interpreted differently: as fundamental ideas that determine the content and direction of legal regulation in the field of social security, or as regulatory and legal guidelines that form the integrity and logical structure of the industry. The author in this study proposes to interpret the principles of social security law as officially recognized provisions, principles or concepts that are reflected in the norms of social security legislation, other regulatory and legal acts, and which in a generalized form contain legal requirements for the essence, content and methods of legal regulation in the field of social security; influence the implementation of legal norms, their interpretation and application; determine the directions of development of legal relations in this area; reflect social laws and needs; ensure the effectiveness of the protection of the social rights of persons affected by social risks; serve as guidelines for improving national legislation and integrating international social protection standards. The author notes that the principles of social security law, despite common features with general legal principles, also have their own industry specifics. Thus, the features that characterize the principles of social security law are identified, namely: they are legal in nature and officially recognized, which ensures their binding nature and unambiguous interpretation; they ensure the relationship between social laws and legal regulation, reflecting the main trends in the development of social security relations; they perform a guiding function, forming an idea of the desired state of social relations, corresponding to modern standards of social protection; they act as effective regulators of social security legal relations.
