The present study analysed the operational holdings and area operated by various-sized groups in Assam, India. The variation of operational holding and area operated by various size groups is one of the crucial measures of rural development. It has potential impacts on agricultural development. Agriculture is the principal occupation of the rural people in Assam and land remains the key means of production. Consequently, the proper land distribution is the prerequisite for agricultural and rural development in the state. Then the redistribution of land is one of the key agendas of the government and the state has adopted several land acts to redistribute the land. The redistribution of land changed the number of operational holdings and area operated by various size groups. The changing scenario of the land distribution changed the agricultural output as well as rural scenario of the state. Hence, the key objective of the present research is to investigate the variation of operational holdings and area operated by various groups in the state during the period from 1970 to 2019. The research applied one way analysis of variance technique to analyse the variation of land between the various size groups. The study also applied the Gini coefficient technique to investigate the variation since it signifies the efficient distribution of land. The study observed a remarkable progress of land distribution in Assam.
