This study was conducted to determine the level of proficiency in the use of appropriate words and the essay-writing skills of Grade 11 students. It also aimed to identify whether there is a significant relationship between proficiency in word usage and essay composition among Grade 11 learners. A survey-correlational research design was employed in this investigation. The participants were Grade 11 students of Maloco National High School, Maloco, Ibajay, Aklan, enrolled during the School Year 2024–2025. Out of a total population of 139 Grade 11 students, the researcher selected 104 participants through stratified random sampling, with the sample size determined using the Raosoft formula. The data required for the study were gathered using two instruments: a proficiency test on the use of appropriate words and a rubric for assessing essay composition. The independent variable of the study was proficiency in word usage, while the dependent variable was essay-writing performance. Data were analyzed using computer-processed statistics, including percentage mean, frequency count, standard deviation, and Pearson r, with the alpha level set at .05 for all inferential tests. The findings revealed that students demonstrated a “proficient” level in their use of appropriate words. Results also showed a “very proficient” level in essay composition. However, the study further indicated that there was “no significant relationship” between proficiency in word usage and essay-writing performance among Grade 11 students.
