The research aims to reveal the didactic potential of foreign language extensive reading as a means of developing functional literacy in students of humanities programs. Functional literacy is considered as the basis for the formation of universal and general professional competencies of future specialists in the humanities. The basic concepts of the terminological apparatus related to extensive reading of professionally oriented foreign language texts are clarified and systematized in the work. The scientific novelty of the research lies in determining the manifestations of functional literacy of university students, developed through foreign language extensive reading. As a result of the research, the pedagogical conditions for the development and implementation of a special course on professionally-oriented foreign language extensive reading for humanities students are substantiated, and the target components of the content of education (cognitive, activity-based, personal, and discursive) are described. A conceptual basis for a didactic model of using foreign language extensive reading is proposed, including target, methodological, regulatory-legal, and content-related blocks.
