Abstract

This review examines (1) connections between the menstrual cycle and affective states of individuals with premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), (2) factors contributing to aforementioned symptomatology, and (3) proposed treatments, all within the androcentric context. Widespread disagreements and misconceptions within the literature point to a dire need to clarify whether the menstrual cycle does affect the mental health of those with PMS and PMDD. This effort would not only increase the accuracy of diagnosis but would also increase efficacy of prescribed treatments and normalize conversations about menstrual symptoms to increase help-seeking behavior.
