This empirical study explores the multifaceted barriers to education and skill development among rural women in Chitrakoot, a backward district of India characterized by socio-economic challenges and limited access to resources. Despite various governmental and non-governmental initiatives aimed at promoting women’s empowerment through education and vocational training, rural women in this region continue to face numerous obstacles. Based on primary data collected from 100 respondents through structured questionnaires and interviews, the study identifies key barriers such as poverty, patriarchal social norms, early marriage, lack of awareness about skill development programs, inadequate transportation, and limited availability of quality educational institutions. Cultural taboos and household responsibilities further restrict women’s participation in educational and training activities. The study also reveals a significant gap between the existing policies and their effective implementation at the grassroots level. The findings highlight the urgent need for context-specific policy interventions, awareness campaigns, and community-based support systems to enhance educational access and vocational skill development among rural women. Empowering women through education and skill training not only improves their socio-economic status but also contributes to sustainable rural development. The paper concludes by recommending a multi-stakeholder approach involving government agencies, NGOs, educational institutions, and local communities to address these barriers effectively.
