Abstract: Vibrato is a defining feature of many genres of singing. In this article, associate editor Justin John Moniz explores the historical development of vibrato in Western vocal music, its treatment in pedagogical literature, and the physiological mechanisms behind its production, including neuromuscular control and reflex models. Key acoustic parameters of vibrato are analyzed, along with their perceptual effects on listeners. A taxonomy of vibrato types is presented, alongside a discussion of their stylistic roles in varying repertoire. The article concludes with practical voice-teaching applications, offering strategies for cultivating a free and stylistically appropriate vibrato.
