The article is devoted to the analysis of trends in the development of small and medium-sized enterprises in Russia. Through the analysis of the dynamics of dependent indicators, it was found that SMEs are developing in an extensive way, with labor being the main factor, which is mainly represented by the informal sector. The article shows the reasons for this phenomenon, which are primarily due to the increasing costs of enterprises. The article will be of interest to those who study the issues of state regulation of SMEs.
