Our journal stands on the Q1 level (the top 25%) in the group of ophthalmology journals (Kaarniranta Kaarniranta 9 citations). Hynnekleiv et al. in Norway analysed a total of 53 clinical trials for hyaluronic acid (HA) in dry eye disease (DED). In their review, HA concentrations ranged from 0.1% to 0.4% in studies lasting up to 3 months. HA was effective at improving both signs and symptoms of DED, but trials investigated did not show the ideal drop frequency for HA-containing eyedrops, and there were limitations to recommend any specific HA formulation over another eyedrop (Hynnekleiv et al., 2022; 38 citations). Perspective in Ophthalmology written by Sirks et al. in the Netherlands, Sweden, Singapore, Israel, Switzerland, the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Denmark and France noticed that the shortage of verteporfin may lead to significant and irreversible vision loss. Large variations in verteporfin use were observed worldwide. Authors argue that verteporfin production should be secured with better strategies in the future (Sirks et al., 2022; 26 citations). Sirk's et al. article was prized by the KKK Lundsgaard Silver Medal given for the best Acta Ophthalmologica publication during the last two years (2022–2024) between NOK congresses. The Silver Medal was given to Dr. Sirks in Kuopio NOK 2024 (Kaarniranta 9 citations). Myopia scored high in the most cited articles in Acta. An original article from Liu et al. in China shows that once children aged 8 to 12 years with −1.00 D to −4.00 D of spherical component myopia and <1.50 D astigmatism are treated with cylindrical annular refractive element (CARE) spectacle lenses, the rate of axial elongation significantly reduces over 1 year compared with single-vision spectacle lenses (Liu et al., 2023; 19 citations). Sarkar et al. in Australia compared the treatment efficacy of childhood myopia control optical interventions spectacles, soft contact lenses (SCLs) and orthokeratology (OK) lenses. Systematic review and meta-analysis reveal that both SCLs and OKs slow down myopia progression, but treatment efficacy is greatest for 6–12 months and reduces over time up to 36 months follow-up (Sarkar et al., 2024; 10 citations). Potapenko et al. in Denmark evaluated ChatGPT accuracy in patient information for age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, retinal artery occlusion and central serous chorioretinopathy. Disease summary, prevention, treatment options and prognosis were asked consecutively five times for each of the diseases. Letter to the Editor data showed that ChatGPT provided highly accurate general information and information on disease prevention and prognosis, while less accurate results were seen for questions dealing with treatment options (Potapenko et al., 2023; 58 citations). Schmidt et al. in Denmark showed in their original article that cataract surgery in childhood is associated with a high risk of late-onset glaucoma. Regular lifelong follow-up is important to ensure early diagnosis and prevent extensive vision loss (Schmidt et al., 2024). The original article of Heloterä et al. in Finland indicates a decline in visual impairment by 75.8% among diabetic macular oedema and by 75.7% among proliferative diabetic retinopathy patients based on the Finnish national register for 2007–2017 (Heloterä et al., 2024). Both original articles were downloaded over 1500 times. Khan and Khan in Ireland concluded in their review (downloaded 2000 times) that the Preserflo Microshunt is not as effective in lowering intra-ocular pressure as trabeculectomy, which has a similar safety profile but a lower reintervention rate (Khan & Khan, 2024). Swedish guidelines for the management of open-angle glaucoma, as a perspective in ophthalmology by Jóhannesson et al. in Sweden, were viewed over 4500 times (Jóhannesson et al., 2024). Gurubaran in Finland thesis 'Mitochondrial damage and clearance in retinal pigment epithelial cells', was viewed 2500 times (Gurubaran, 2024). Taken together, guidelines and review articles are clearly more cited and downloaded compared with other publication subtypes. Currently, myopia-, glaucoma- and artificial intelligence-related manuscripts are the most common topics. We are going to publish a special issue on myopia in Acta Ophthalmologica.
