Global population across 215 countries assessed for diabetes prevalence and projections
Global prevalence of diabetes and projections for 2050
The IDF Diabetes Atlas provides comprehensive global estimates and future projections for diabetes prevalence, highlighting its major contribution to the rising burden of chronic kidney disease.
The prevalence and the burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD) are both rising steadily around the world (1).Much of this rise can be attributed to a major expansion of hypertension and, especially, diabetes mellitus in aging populations.CKDs future trends are inexorably linked to trends in diabetes, which is currently estimated to be the attributable cause of 36% of the CKD burden (1).Thus, it behooves all interested in the care and prevention of CKD to take note of whats happening in the world of diabetes.Three primary sources currently provide information on the global frequency of diabetes: the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study (1), the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC) (2), and the IDF Diabetes Atlas.Only the Atlas focuses exclusively on diabetes.Produced under the aegis of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), the umbrella organization of more than 240 national diabetes societies in 161 countries and territories, the Atlas launched its first edition in 2000.It has since published updates every two to three years. Its recent editions have become increasingly sophisticated in methodology and have expanded in scope. The Atlas applies the expertise of epidemiologists and diabetologists associated with the IDF to produce estimates for 215 countries.Aside from its core editorial team, it aggregates special interest groups around its topics: diabetes prevalence, diabetes prevalence in older adults, undiagnosed diabetes, intermediate states of hyperglycemia,
