Part I consists of a directory of colleges and universities in the United States, alphabetized first by states and then by institutional titles within each state. The U. S. Educational Directory, Part III, 1962-63, has been used to obtain the list of 2,100 colleges and their branches. Other colleges added are indicated as "not listed." Information about addresses, accreditation, control, whether coeducational, whether using a semester, quarter or trimester system, classification regarding levels and kinds of offerings, and enrollments have been taken from this Directory. Addresses have been changed and postal zone zip numbers have been added when these have been provided by correspondence. Information about staff members, their degrees, and academic titles or ranks, and chairmen or other executive officers have been obtained through direct correspondence with some institutional officer. Where ranking order of staff members has not been supplied, we have tried to guess, not always accurately, what that order should be from the data supplied. Many smaller institutions do not have ranks. Occasionally information has remained incomplete, and we have omitted all references to "Ph.D. candidate" and placer where degrees were obtained. We have sought to obtain information about courses offered in departments not designated as "Philosophy," by indicating their names and titles in parentheses at the end of the staff list.
