Problem statement. Green spaces play a significant role in the life of a modern big city. The active development of urbanization processes negatively affects the ecological state of the city and necessitates its reconstruction on the basis of sustainable development and the principles of greening. To improve the quality of human life, it is necessary to transform the structural and planning framework of a modern city, namely, its five subsystems: engineering, transport, social infrastructure, housing development and landscaping. An important task of the architectural and urban transformation of the city is the protection of historical landscapes, the preservation and restoration of green areas, the formation of a system of green spaces in interaction with the natural framework of the city. Purpose of the article. Research into the development of the theory and practice of forming a system of green spaces in the city in time and space to improve the greening systems of a modern city and develop concepts for greening the city for the future. Conclusion. The theoretical foundations of the formation of the system of green spaces of a modern city are considered: definitions, factors, methods, functions, elements, connections, principles. The aspects of the formation of the system of green spaces of a city are analyzed in the context of the transformation of the idea from the greening of an "ideal city" to design concepts and principle schemes of the system of green spaces of large cities in the new history of urban planning, theoretical models of the formation of green spaces of a city, as a result of researching the problem over the centuries. Methodological schemes are developed: “Theoretical foundations of the formation of the system of green spaces of a city”, “Evolution of ideas regarding the formation of the system of green spaces in time and space”.
